SVCCC Arts Project

Art has been combined with healthcare in both eastern and western medicine since the beginning of recorded history. Studies have shown that art aids in healing by altering a person's physiology and attitude. When viewing or creating art, the body's physiology changes from one of stress to one of deep relaxation, from fear to creativity and inspiration. Art also changes a person's perception of the world including attitude, emotional state and pain perception.

Having cancer can be a difficult and frightening experience. At St. Vincent's Comprehensive Cancer Center (SVCCC), we understand the challenges faced by people with cancer and their families, and we provide a full range of support services to help them through this very difficult time. The cancer center was designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects with the goal of creating a comfortable and open environment that would help foster the partnership between patient and caregiver.

Since our inception in 1996, we have been collecting and displaying art that is uplifting, diverse and stimulating for our patients, caregivers and guests. The SVCCC Arts Project was developed to bring the many talents found in the historic neighborhood of Chelsea where the cancer center is located into the healthcare environment by offering gallery shows to local artists.
